  1. When the conversation about people who are detained by a law enforcement agency, twists and winds in directions that seem strange, well that's because the people at the table trying to speak about the subject are seeming clueless about the subject. Here's what I mean:

When an Agency decides that it will house, detain and/or incarcerate individuals for whatever the reason may be, that agency has a duty and responsibility to provide care and maintain order and control at the facility. That goes for the Warden, Deputy Warden, Captain and Correction Officers.

However, as I look around the country at the various jurisdictions that have been in the news lately, providing a standard of minimum care with an emphasis on custody management and accountability has been lost. Detainees dying while in custody and no one in the facility has a clue? Children dying while in custody and no one has a clue? Detainees not provided with adequate health, welfare, basic needs and essential items, which by the way, a Federal Judge has to entertain an oral argument from an Attorney trying explain that it isn't a necessary requirement? Really?

Who is in the wheelhouse at these facilities while all of this going on? Somebody try and respond to this.

So you're probably asking, well Mr. Investigator, Mr. Retired NYC CO, Mr. Former Correction Officer, what are you trying to say? I'm glad you asked. This is the point I want make.

Don't settle for mediocrity when it comes to what should be expected from those of us who wear the badge with the uniform and go to work. Regardless of where we work. In the street as cops or at Prisons or detention facilities as Correction Officers. it doesn't matter.

We all graduated the academy and we should be held to a higher standard. The manner in which some of these Correction Officers line supervisors and management level supervisors treat the detention population is shameful and in some cases, criminal. Yes I went there. Criminal!

So if there is a serious conversation to be had about how to implement minimum standards of care, custody management and control in a detention facility, make sure there is someone at the table who can speak truth to power and bring authenticity to the discussion. Experts and scientists don't have all the answers.

Now if it's only about the political backlash that might arise because the truth of the matter may prevail from having an authentic voice at the table adding positively to the discourse and discussion about this topic. Let me in a real, authentic, meaningful, genuine and sincere way, offer this additional read to all of you:

    King James Version. The Bible.
The Book of John Chapter 8, Verse 32.

Thanks for listening. In my next Blog, I'll talk about the difference between a jail/detention facility and a prison. You don't want to miss that.
